Almost a year ago, I and my cousin went to 50-50 Pizza in Hyderabad. It was 31st of August 2017 and it was my Birthday.
I spent more than one hour there observing 2 waiters. Well, it was difficult to shadow their movements while sitting idle, therefore; I ordered a pizza, and that bought me a plenty amount of time, which helped me observe their movements thoroughly. No doubt, from their appearance, both waiters seemed to eke out a living.
The one who took order from us, his name was Rashid. When I asked him his name, he looked at me with suspicious eyes like I was going to hit him or something. Then I asked my cousin to call the other waiter, since my cousin was a chain smoker and he wanted to smoke cigarettes at that time, so I told my cousin to ask other waiter to buy some cigarettes for him. Well I could refer Rashid - the waiter who took order from us- to get some cigarettes for my cousin, but since I had to observe the other waiter I didn’t call Rashid. After 10 minutes, when he brought cigarettes for my cousin, I asked him his name and he answered very politely that his name was Abbas, and further he asked me my name in return. But since he was already engaged on another table, he didn’t stay long enough and he left with a smile saying “enjoy”.
If you ever have been to Pizza hut in Pakistan, you would definitely be aware that they took at least 30 minutes to bring your order because they also had to deliver pizzas at homes. So I shadowed both Rashid and Abbas for more than an hour. Rashid was moving everywhere trying to seek attention of people so that everyone call him for order, while Abbas remained very calm, and he was walking near the tables calmly. Even Rashid sometimes told Abbas to do his work, as to bring plates or ketch up etc, but Abbas never asked Rashid for any help, rather he was doing his own work only.
The most important thing I noticed in both of them that was their behaviour towards customers. Rashid’s best behavior was reserved for the people who were coming in cars, but he was not dealing energetically with those who were coming on Bikes. There was fluctuation in Rashid’s behavior. In contrast, Abbas was dealing everyone with the same smile and attitude.
The one thing that intrigued me most that when costumers were giving them tip, Rashid was bowing down his head like we often see in movies when slaves bow down their heads in front of their masters, however: the case was different with Abbas, he was just smiling and making Dua with beautiful words.
Basically, what I concluded from my observation is that, some people toil long hours and in return they expect a good remuneration with some respect. While in some cases if there is no adequate remuneration for work but still respect is provided blindly, people will work happily. But it is impossible for people to work when remuneration is small and further no respect is provided. So it depends upon people which way they prefer most. Because, the very decisions made by people often lead them towards their eternal success or towards their unending damnation.
